Sports Careers RSO: Red Out Feb. 24

The Ferris State University’s Sports Careers Registered Student Organization (RSO) is proud to announce that it will be holding its fourth annual “Red Out” event on Saturday, Feb. 24 in the Ewigleben Sports Complex.

The month of February is Women’s Heart Health month and the event is a way that Ferris State University’s Sports Careers RSO gives back to the community and those who have been affected by heart health in their life or someone in their families.

Nearly everyone you come in contact with has had someone in their family or a friend affected with a heart condition at some given point in time; therefore this event provides awareness to the spectators at the sporting events that this is an important issue that needs to be taken serious.

The event raises awareness and money for Women’s Heart Health and Spectrum Health’s Cardiac Unit.

The event on Feb. 24 spans over the course of the entire day of Ferris State Athletic events. Ferris State men’s basketball begins at 1:00 p.m., followed by Women’s basketball at 3:00 p.m., and concluding with men’s ice hockey at 7:00 p.m.

All the teams for Ferris State will be wearing their home crimson red and all fans are asked to wear red for the games.

The event places an emphasis on if you are healthy enough to participate in sport. All over the world there are people that are unable to join a team or simply play a game they love, due to their heart condition.

This year, the students of the Ferris State nursing program will be in attendance during the men’s and women’s basketball games. This gesture will be part of their good works and service hours to the community to take the blood pressure of spectators and fans in attendance for the game to see if their heart is healthy enough for sport.

Dr. Sandy Alspach’s who is the adviser of the event, uses her Communication 389 & 489 classes also pair up to help promote and work the operations of the events to ensure a day filled with excitement in the Big Rapids and Ferris State Athletics community.

Local businesses in the Mecosta County area help support Sports Careers RSO for this event by donating goods and services to be included in the silent auction at the event.

This year some of the silent auction items include a signed basketball by the 24-1, nationally-third ranked Ferris State men’s basketball team, a signed volleyball by the four-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Champions Ferris State women’s volleyball team, a signed football by the 2017 National Quarterfinalist Ferris State football team, and many more.

The event is one of the RSO’s three philanthropy events this semester. The other two events include the Area 5 Special Olympics Basketball game and the Area 5 Special Olympians Poly Hockey game.

The “Red Out” event will get underway Saturday, Feb. 24 as the men’s basketball team will take on archrival Grand Valley State University at 1:00 p.m. in Jim Wink Arena.

Come out and be apart of an event that will change lives. Fans are asked to wear red.
